125: We Need Innovation In Housing
Why are rents so expensive in San Francisco? The ShouldWes Have Won.
If you look at the price of housing in San Francisco, you’ll see that even the crappiest studio apartments go for $3500 a month. Why are prices so ridiculous? San Francisco is a great city, but is it worth that? The problem is supply – there are simply not enough units. Why? Because the ShouldWes in the government are actively shutting down and tearing down the work that the DoIts are attempting to perform.
We need innovation in housing. We need to take
a good, long look at what the definition of housing. How much space does a typical human need? In America, that number ranges from 250 sqft to 4500 sq ft and up. If you look at the rest of the world, many people live in even smaller spaces. What we need to do is to create a new unit of housing, something small and portable and modular. Something that can fit into the spaces between things. In order to do that, we need to change the attitudes of the ShouldWes who are trying to shut down innovation at every turn. The question is: if they really wanted to alleviate the housing crisis we would allow much more innovation than we have done so far. The problem is not the technology, as usual, it’s political and human.
