What is Your Personal Innovation Quotient?
Good morning I’m your host Chris Kalaboukis and once again we’re coming to you live from deep in the heart of Silicon Valley California. What’s your I.Q. What’s your personal I.Q. and I’m not talking about intelligence quotient how individuals themselves need to be innovative need to act innovative Lee need to be open to innovation and I think myself would be great if we had some kind of metric that we could use to determine how innovative a person was I mean would it be great if you could pop that right on your resume and go hey this guy’s personal innovation quotient is super high at it even with scale B.. But then I got to thinking would it be great if we knew this personal innovation quotient we all came up with a personal innovation quotient or P I Q Let’s call it that. And in this P. I.Q. we would be able to gather all of the elements that makes someone more or less innovative and I thought well if we’re trying to think about that what kind of elements what are the elements the make you more innovative What are the elements of innovation. I think the first one would probably be the burning desire to learn to read to expand their mind to expand their consciousness. There’s very few innovators that I know of who don’t spend a lot of time absorbing. I mean you hear about C.E.O.’s with giant lists of books that they’ve read or are about to read. They spend tons of time absorbing the outside world absorbing things absorbing in. Absorbing information and then sort of throwing it into the head and processing it. So the propensity to learn the desire to learn the desire to absorb more new information is one thing that would definitely go into my innovation quotient. And the second thing would be open-mindedness How open are you to listening to people to listening to new ideas to listening to new opinions to differing opinions to listening and absorbing and hearing things that you may not necessarily agree with. In fact I would argue that listening to people who you agree with makes you less innovative. But putting yourself in situations and listening to others and reading contrarian viewpoints things that you don’t agree with things that you think are completely wrong but listening and absorbing just like in the first step listening and absorbing and being part of an understanding different viewpoints being open minded to be to be able to hear anything. And I have talked about this before when I’m in some meetings and we blow out some really interesting innovative far out concepts and somebody stop right there don’t go there don’t go there that’s dangerous for the organization. But that’s not what you want in your personal innovation quotient you want to be open minded you want to be able to listen to new things even if they are or even if they feel a little dangerous. The third thing that I would include in this personal innovation quotient if it existed. Was to physically. Move and be in different places physically go to and experience different places and I’m not talking about space. Civically international travel or whatever but basically working in living and experiencing new actual new places and meeting new people and I guess that could be two different aspects of that but physically taking yourself and inserting yourself into different surroundings. Will help you experience new things and new people which will help you to learn things you never would have been able to do if you were just sitting beside you behind your desk or in that co-working space day after day or in that Starbucks day after day. Physically inserting yourself in new. Places in seeing and talking to new faces and listening to new faces. I mean I’ve talked about this before in reading a whole bunch of stuff on the psychology of humans and how to change human psychology and how important someone’s external environment is. To their performance I didn’t realize how much the external environment and the people you work with affect what you’re like because we all think oh yeah well let’s give this guy a project and he’ll. Just muscle through it burn through that. And if we don’t set him up with the proper physical external environment he’ll fail. So the reality is that inserting yourself into new physical environments doing new things in new places with new people. Is a huge factor in your personal innovation quotient. Second last thing is having time to simply think. Now I’m going to. Map this a little bit to meditative time but the thing about meditation is that what you’re trying. Do is open your mind clear your mind of thoughts clear your mind of thoughts basically empty your mind try and. Become one of empty mind or maybe just have a mantra are some of the repeat not used to do this and meditation a long time ago. But meditation is different because there you’re supposed to try an empty your mind this is more of sitting still being quiet and thinking simply thinking so after the first piece where you’re absorbing and learning and learning in absorbing. And all these things coming into your brain just spending the time to simply sit and think and noodle and you can be doing other things when you’re doing this you could be driving you could be in a shop in the shower or you could be in all these other things but actually spending time taking those bits of knowledge in your mind and putting them together in different ways taking those Tetris pieces of ideas and thoughts and reflections and soundbites and just putting them together in different ways. Taking the time to actually do that thinking. That should be something that goes into your personal innovation quotient. And the last thing. I. Would say that’s really important for someone for someone’s personal innovation quotient is the propensity to take risks the ability to or the openness to take that leap do that new thing actually break out of their comfort zone do something new do something different. Do something they’ve never done before. Take the risk even if you’re unsure that it’s going to succeed whatever you’re thinking about doing. Take the risk effect I was talking about this the other day when it came to ages and I think they were talking about. One of the reasons why people think that younger people are more innovative than older people or can come up with newer ideas is because they are more open minded to risk but I think what being open minded to risk has absolutely nothing to do with your age has absolutely nothing to do with your social status in life has absolutely nothing to do with anything it’s a simple act of being open to. Taking the risk no matter where you are in your life. So risk taking itself is if you asked me. The last element of your personal innovation cautions it would be great if we could come up with this number this P.I. Q or whatever you want to call it or I.Q. or. Cue. This innovation quotient and just score everybody on an I.Q. on I and Q. and if everyone has their personal innovation quotient and it’s really easy to figure out if someone is innovative it’s really figuring to figure out easy to figure out if a company is innovative you just have to take the PIQs. Of all the individuals in the leadership team. That I’m up to the average. And see if that organization is innovative. So I don’t know maybe I’ll come up with that. So. It’s important to have one or even the elements of one. So just one of the note I’m thinking about morphing the show a little bit along the lines of becoming an interview program now I’ve done a lot of solo shows for a very long time what’s been one hundred fifty seven episodes or something like that and now I want to start introducing new voices into the mix so if you’re out there and you’re listening and you’re in the innovation business or you’re an innovation innovation individual where you’re innovative individual you’ve done some.
